Overview

User Research Interaction Design Prototyping Usability Testing

StyleSwap is a mobile marketplace where Gen Z users buy, sell, and discover secondhand fashion through short-form video content. I joined the team as the lead product designer during the app's early growth phase, when they had 50K users but struggled with low engagement and high cart abandonment. My role focused on redesigning the discovery feed and checkout experience to make sustainable fashion shopping feel as addictive as scrolling TikTok. Over 4 months, I worked closely with two developers and a product manager to ship features that transformed how users interact with preloved clothing.

Problem Statement

Users loved browsing StyleSwap's unique inventory but rarely completed purchases. Analytics showed 68% of users abandoned their carts, and the average session time was under 2 minutes. Through user interviews, I discovered the core issue: the app felt like a traditional marketplace when users wanted a social experience. They couldn't gauge item quality from static photos, didn't trust seller credibility, and found the checkout process too formal for casual browsing. The challenge was making secondhand shopping feel spontaneous and trustworthy, not transactional.

Challenges

  • Static product photos couldn't convey fabric texture, fit, or styling possibilities. Users wanted to see items in motion and styled on real people, but sellers weren't creating video content. I needed to design a video upload flow simple enough for casual sellers while maintaining quality standards that buyers trusted.

  • Building trust between strangers buying used clothing was critical. Without seller ratings or verification systems, buyers hesitated to purchase. I had to design credibility signals that felt authentic to Gen Z, not corporate like traditional e-commerce trust badges.

  • The checkout flow required 8 steps including shipping details, payment info, and size confirmation. This formal process killed the spontaneous browsing vibe. I needed to streamline purchasing without sacrificing necessary information, especially for items where fit matters.

  • Users wanted to browse casually but the feed algorithm showed random items without considering their style preferences. Creating a personalized discovery experience required balancing user taste signals with inventory diversity, all while keeping the feed feeling fresh and surprising.

Solutions

  • I designed a TikTok-style vertical video feed where sellers could upload 15-second styling clips. The upload flow used in-app recording with auto-cropping and filters, making it dead simple. We added gentle prompts like "Show the fit!" and "Spin around!" to guide sellers. This shifted the platform from static listings to dynamic content that actually showed how clothes moved and fit.

  • Instead of traditional star ratings, I introduced seller profiles with personality. Users could see how many items someone sold, their response time, and style aesthetic through a mini portfolio. I added a "Reliable Seller" badge earned after 10 successful sales with good feedback. This felt more authentic than corporate verification and gave sellers something to work toward.

  • I collapsed the checkout into a 2-step bottom sheet that slides up without leaving the feed. Step 1 confirms size and shipping (pre-filled from profile), Step 2 handles payment (saved methods front and center). Users could complete a purchase in under 10 seconds without losing their place in the feed. This maintained the casual browsing momentum while capturing impulse buys.

  • I designed a preference quiz during onboarding where users picked their vibe through visual style cards. The feed algorithm then prioritized items matching their aesthetic while mixing in trending pieces. Users could double-tap items they loved to refine recommendations. This created a personalized experience that felt curated, not algorithmic.

Outcome

Transforming Browsing into Buying

The redesigned experience launched in beta to 10K users and the results exceeded our goals. Cart abandonment dropped from 68% to 31%, and average session time jumped from 2 minutes to 8 minutes. Most importantly, 45% of sellers started creating video content within the first month, completely shifting the platform's content ecosystem. The video feed became our most engaging feature, with users spending 3x more time there than on traditional grid listings.
